Bboy Crazy Legs was born in The Bronx but grew up in Manhattan, New York, USA. Crazy Leg wanted to become a baseball player for the New York Yankees. He has three brothers who are Djs and he also tried to be a Dj because of his older brothers. He saw breaking for the first time in 1976 at the age of 9 performed by Dj Africa Islam and his brother Robert Colon and he was embarrassed by his brother’s breaking Crazy Legs grew up listening to soulful music. He started dancing in 1977 when his cousin took him to a jam on Katonah Avenue and became the president of Rock Steady Crew in 1983. He got his name ‘Crazy Legs’ from one of his school’s cheerleader captains “Arlene Rosario” when she saw him practicing in the auditorium. He also created the windmill which was accidently done while practicing chair freeze to backspin.
Crazy Legs had the first ever Hip-Hop tours in the 80’s and formed the basis of Hip-Hop culture. He thinks hip-hop is based on 5 elements i.e Emceeing, Djing, B-Boying, Graffiti, and Knowledge. Crazy Leg with Rock Steady Crew had their song “Hey You” recorded without their knowledge which sold over a million copies and each member made around $7 thousand through litigation. Bboy Crazy Legs and his Rock Steady Crew were involved in a donation given to the congressman in 2004. He was an ambassador for Fila Sportswear and the Rock Steady crew became the first B-Boys to have their own ‘Rock Steady Crew 77’ sneakers and they were the first B-Boys to perform at Carnegie Hall in 2001.
Bboy Crazy Legs prefers a well dressed B-Boy as a judge and lives by the code “Don’t mistake my confidence for arrogance”. He was included in the Hip-Hop Hall of Fame in the year 2002 and also became the choreographer for Wyclef Jean’s music video which got nominated for MTV Awards. He annually organizes an event for the Rock Steady anniversary.
His most memorable experience was the battle in a club “First Class”. Bboy Crazy Legs volunteers to teach the B-Boying to young kids. He also appeared in the film Beat Street in 1984. He also represented Red Bull BC One All Stars and has a character in the ‘Def Jam Fight For NY’ video game. Crazy Leg’s favorite song to battle on is Mambo No 5 and favorite lyricist is Jay-Z. He is a president of an entertainment company “Backspin Productions”. He retired on 28th July, 2012 from competitions.
