The Style Elements is a 20-member breaking crew from Stockton, Modesto, California, USA which was founded in 1994. They became the first USA champions of the Battle of the Year in 1997.

Style Elements Crew Facts:

The Style Elements’ idea is based on expressing individual style and all elements of hip-hop which are Breaking, DJing, MCing, Beat Boxing & Graffiti.

Bboys Remind and Ivan wanted to form a crew based on Jam On The Groove to get respect and build up their name. They wanted everyone on the crew, whether it was a breaker, popper, locker, graffiti artist, or a musician because that’s what their crew name implied.

The crew was formed in 1994 and became the two-time champions of then biggest battle “Radiotron” in 1995 and 1996. They became famous all over the world due to this massive win two times in a row which made the organizers fo the Battle of the Year invite them in 1997 to represent the USA.

The organizers wanted four members to fly to the event, however, they wanted a fifth member to join them which made them sign a deal with the organizers. The deal was that, if they win the battle then they have to pay for the flight ticket of that fifth person from the prize money. So, they took bboy Crumbs, Remind, Jayrawk, Super Dave, and Tommy Boy. 

Winning the competition wasn’t their main goal. They went to Germany with the intention of battling the renowned Battle Squad, particularly Storm and Swift. They didn’t actually think they could beat them, they just wanted to have an exchange between the German style and their 209 style. The victory was unexpected but celebrated, marking a significant moment in hip-hop history.

The Crew members have since featured in a wide array of commercials for major brands like iPod, Jolly Ranchers, Coke, Volkswagen, and Skechers. Their talents also graced the big screen in movies such as 2 Fast 2 Furious, You Got Served, and Step Up 2.

Style Elements’ presence extended to live performances, including a memorable halftime show at the NBA All-Star Games in Los Angeles. They’ve also contributed to the music industry, touring and assisting in choreography for artists like Justin Timberlake, Gwen Stefani, Black Eyed Peas, Christina Aguilera, and Missy Elliot.

Bboy Poe One is an original member of the Style Elements crew and his name, “Poe One,” stands for “Peace on Earth”, originally it was given to him by two Brooklyn guys named Puc and Zoe who used the P and OE from their names. Before that, he was called Nes which meant ‘Never Ending Style’. 

He has a mixed heritage of Puerto Rican and Bolivian roots, where his father is from Bolivia and his mother is from Puerto Rico. Music was always present in his household and his mother taught him to dance by putting him on her feet while dancing salsa.

He started roller skating in 1974 at just four years old. Before breaking, he was into strutting, beginning in 1980 when he was ten. By the age of twelve, in 1982, he fully embraced breaking due to his cousin. His dedication to dance was so strong that he would hitchhike from his hometown to others if there was a new dancer in the town to battle them or simply to test their skills.

He was mentored by Mr. Wiggles on his development as a dancer and educator. Poe One mentioned how Wiggles taught him the importance of discipline, time management, and maintaining a strong work ethic in the hip-hop industry.

Bboy Crumbs was born in Nevada and later moved to Panama around the age of 1. When the war broke out in Panama due to the invasion of the US to capture Manuel Noriega, a former ally, his mother shifted his whole family to Modesto, California. 

His life took a turn when he first witnessed breaking at a roller-skating rink. The sight of kids breaking on the dance floor captivated him, and soon enough, he traded his roller skates for the raw, powerful moves of breaking. In 1998, he then moved to Los Angeles, driven by a desire to take his breaking to the next level. With breaking gaining more visibility in mainstream media, he quickly found himself in demand. His first major gig was with Christina Aguilera, and from there, his career in Hollywood took off. He appeared in numerous movies and commercials, working alongside major artists like Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera.

He is one of the original members of the Style Elements crew who helped in forming the crew after he got into bboying in 1992 and is known for his intricate and complex approach to bboying, a style that emphasizes creative flow, elaborate thread combinations, and distinct blow-ups. 

He played a pivotal role in popularizing a style known as stacking, and throughout his career, he has strived to be as well-rounded as possible. Moreover, legends like Ken Swift, Crazy Legs, and Storm were his inspirations.

He has been awarded the prestigious Spy Award, Most Creative Bboy, and Best Crew at the Hip Hop Dance Awards. He also choreographed for top artists like Justin Timberlake, Missy Elliot, Black Eyed Peas, and Christina Aguilera. He has appeared in major dance films, including You Got Served and How She Move, and has taken on acting roles in Sony Pictures’ Battle Of The Year and Disney’s Step Up 2. His commercial work includes spots for McDonald’s, Coke, Apple, Volkswagen, and Toyota. Additionally, Crumbs is featured as a main character in Sony PlayStation’s video game, Bboy.

He also launched the Crumbs Workshop in 2012, a Bboy Dance School System aimed at teaching dancers of all levels how to think creatively within the art of bboying, among other skills. 

Over the years, the wear and tear on his shoulders from decades of stacking, flipping, and intense power moves began to take a toll. In 2018, while ciphering in Colombia, he suffered a severe injury, snapping his clavicle bone in half. This injury led to shoulder surgery, marking the beginning of a challenging recovery process.

The surgery left him with limited mobility in his shoulder and significant scar tissue. This journey led him to stem cell therapy, a cutting-edge treatment that uses cells from a baby’s umbilical cord to regenerate damaged tissue.

In August 2024, he underwent stem cell treatment in Tijuana, Mexico, at a state-of-the-art facility. The procedure involved injecting 200 million stem cells into his shoulders and neck, aiming to regenerate the worn-out ligaments and restore some of the lost mobility. The treatment requires a three-month recovery period, during which he will be unable to break, but the potential benefits are significant.

Bboy Jayrawk got his stage name from his older brother way before he started breaking who was a bboy at the time and used to compete against a breaker named ‘J-Rock’.

He was introduced to breaking in 1980s San Jose, heavily influenced by his older brother, who was part of a legendary crew called the Sidewalk Breakers. As the 90s rolled in, the dance scene had quieted down, with many people moving on to other pursuits. However, he and his cousins, inspired by the movie Beat Street, began practicing moves in high school. They were unaware that breaking was still alive in other parts of the city. Together, they formed a crew, mostly made up of Latino and Black members, and began practicing in their school’s hallways, often getting kicked out for their efforts.

The turning point came when he met Poe One who had just returned from Puerto Rico and was searching for b-boys in the area. A mutual acquaintance connected him with the crew, and from there, they began training together.

Bboy Midus was born in Beirut, Lebanon but grew up in Los Angeles where he started dancing in 1997, he named Pasadena’s 101 as a major early influence. Bboy Crayone Facts:

Bboy Crayone was born in San Francisco and started his journey of Hip-hop as a breakdancer by the stage name “SpaceGhost”, joining the Style Elements crew in 2011. He was influenced by documentaries like “Style Wars” and “Wild Style” which influenced him to explore the world of spray-can art.

By the mid-1980s, he had transitioned from breakdancing to spray painting (Graffiti). His early work quickly gained attention, leading him to form the first Bay Area spray-can art crew, TWS (Together With Style).

At just 19 years old, he began receiving commissions for murals, slowly building an impressive portfolio. He became the first graffiti artist from the West Coast to hold a one-man show in an established gallery in Palo Alto, California. His work was showcased in prestigious galleries and museums, including the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, the Museum of Modern Art in Los Angeles, and the Oakland Art Museum. His art appeared in numerous books, such as “The History of American Graffiti” and “Freight Train Graffiti”.

From 1989 to 1991, he attended the Al Collins School of Design in Tempe, Arizona, to study graphic design. He further refined his skills at the California College of Arts and Crafts (CCAC) in Oakland. 

In the mid-1990s, he ventured into web design, creating websites for various companies, including his own. He also worked as a graphic designer and art director, balancing his creative endeavors with a steady income. Throughout this period, he continued to receive mural commissions.

In 2011,  He became a firefighter in San Francisco, it required years of dedication, education, and volunteer work. He took fire science courses, attended a local fire academy, and earned his EMT certification, all while continuing his work as an artist.

Bboy A-Game started with dancing and MCing at the same time. He was also involved in writing short stories and joined the Style Elements crew in 2011. 

His upbringing, was influenced by Buddhist thought and traditional Khmer dance where his sister was a Khmer dancer, and he often observed the delicate, feminine movements characteristic of this ancient art form. He incorporated these movements into his breaking.

One of the most profound aspects of his dance journey is how he channels his family’s history of trauma into his performances. His family’s experience of surviving genocide and adapting to life in America has left an unforgettable mark on him, and he refers to this as “transgenerational trauma”. When he hits a beat with emotion, that feeling comes from that transgenerational trauma.

He draws inspiration from older boys like Poe One, Alien Ness, and Ken Swift. He also worked on an academic paper that analyzes the history of b-boying, particularly after the 1980s at his time in UC Berkeley in 2012.

He credits two organizations, SASC (Southeast Asian Student Coalition) and APALI (Asian Pacific American Leadership Institute), for helping him develop a strong sense of identity.

BAS1 hails from Oakland and joined the Style Elements crew in the late 90s. He stepped into the music industry as a dancer, starting in 1977, he was drawn to the world of robot articulation and eventually found his way into the rap scene by 1985. Influenced legends like Kurtis Blow, Kurtis Blow heavily influenced his early style, but it was the guidance of Grandmaster Caz and Kool Moe Dee that shaped his evolution as an artist.

In 1989-1990, he started recording tracks with producer Dion Evans, who would later go on to achieve significant recognition for his work with major artists, including 2Pac. Simultaneously, he was also touring the world with the legendary Rock Steady Crew.

He is also the creator of the rap crew Cytoplasmz, a group that emerged from his desire to mentor and guide younger artists. Bboy Dol hails from South Korea and was affectionately called ‘Jindoli,’ a playful twist on his real name, Park Jin-hyung. When it came time to choose his b-boy nickname, his older brother, who is also a bboy, suggested simply using ‘Dol’.

He encountered dancing on the subway for the first time and he copied it because it looked cool to him. He is renowned in the b-boying community for his signature move, the ‘Dol flare.’ His battle tip for aspiring b-boys is to play a lot of rounds. He suggests that if the number of rounds needed to win a battle is 10, one should practice 10 rounds twice a day, totalling 20 rounds. This method, repeated 2-3 times a week, helps the body react spontaneously during actual battles.

His older brother, Racoon, is also a b-boy and a member of the same MB Crew. He started b-boying a few years after Racoon, following in his brother’s footsteps. Among his favorite dancers are Physicx, K-Mel, and from other dance genres, he admires Hoan, Hozin, 5000, and Yoon Ji. He is a close colleague of B-boy Zealot and also from MB Crew. Bboy Artson grew up in Las Vegas, USA but is originally from the Tarahumara tribe from Chihuahua, Mexico. He discovered breaking in 1983 when his brother took him to their neighbours who were breaking in their backyard. He started to learn backspin and the fun of spinning in circles quickly drew him in. His love for hip-hop grew as he watched movies like Beat Street and Breakin’.

After his parents’ divorce, Artson spent his early years in Texas before moving to Las Vegas at 19. This move was prompted by a judge who granted him the opportunity to relocate after a couple of run-ins with the law, recognizing that staying in Texas would likely lead to more trouble.

In Vegas, his journey in hip-hop deepened. He crossed paths with legendary dancers like Ivan, Crumbs, Flowmaster, and members of Style Elements, who became his mentors and friends. Eventually, he was invited to join Rocksteady Crew by Mr. Wiggles, a dream come true for the young dancer who had idolized the crew since childhood.

He faced a heartbreaking moment when the crew’s leader, Crazy Legs, unexpectedly disbanded the crew through a text message, leaving many members, including him, without a clear direction. This led him to make a difficult decision: to leave Rocksteady and join Style Elements Crew officially.

He is also a musician and his album Brave Star marked a turning point in his music career, earning him accolades and even a Native American Music Award. 

He was an alcoholic and his sobriety journey began after years of struggling with substance abuse, a battle that started at a very young age. The first six months were particularly challenging, as they marked the longest period he had gone without drinking since he was a teenager. Even after a decade, he admits that the battle is ongoing. There are still moments of temptation, times when the thought of having just one drink crosses his mind. However, he remains steadfast in his commitment to sobriety.

Bboy Remind has been dancing since he was 5-6 years old inspired by Michael Jackson. Growing up, he watched his cousins’ breakdance, trying to imitate their moves as a young child. He was also fascinated by Kung Fu movies.

It wasn’t until he saw Beat Street that his life truly changed. That movie was the catalyst that transformed him from a kid who admired dance from afar into a full-fledged B-boy. In the middle of the movie, at a drive-in theater, he ripped up a pizza box, and there, on one of the humps where cars parked, he started doing hand spins. That was the moment he knew he had found my calling.

His intricate footwork was which was heavily influenced by the circles he was a part of and the dancers he admired. He credits Mikey Ice, a fellow B-boy, as one of his early inspirations. Mikey’s unique take on top rock and footwork left a lasting impression on him, leading him to incorporate similar movements into his own style.

He would watch footage of legends like Ken Swift, who was also a significant influence on their approach to B-boying. The “butterfly” move, which became one of his signature elements, was first seen in the circles with Mikey Ice and later refined by Remind and his crew.

As far as his diet is concerned, he remembers a moment that was both eye-opening and disturbing for him. He saw a spilt milkshake on the pavement that had solidified into something resembling rubber. It struck him that this was no ordinary food; this was fast food, and it was affecting his health. This realization was a turning point for him and he decided to cut out fast food and begin a journey towards better health and self-awareness.

Bboy Urban Action Figure aka Ivan’s dance journey began in the 1980s when breaking was still evolving. He was initially drawn to the dance through the influence of funk and iconic artists like Parliament and Roger. When he saw people spinning and doing moves that looked like ice skating, he didn’t think it was for him. 

Growing up in the late 70s, his father would jam with his band late into the night, while his brothers filled the house with music, dancing to their extensive record collection. In 1984, he started popping and party rocking, a year later, he saw breaking on TV for the first time, but it didn’t immediately resonate with him. It wasn’t until 1987 that he ventured into acro-rocking, and by 1993, he fully embraced breaking where he was known as “Flip Man” due to his acrobatic abilities. However, it wasn’t until he trained with legends like Little Caesar that his potential was fully realized. This training sharpened his skills and added depth to his already impressive moves.

A significant moment happened in his journey when he met Andy Garcia, a football player from Wilmington LA. He was doing moves in his garage that were mind-blowing, what inspired him was their refusal to give up and he wanted to embrace the basics and make them his own.

Bboy Mikey Ice’s journey began in the soulful sounds of music. His transformation into a B-boy was sparked by an unexpected source which was the TV show “Ripley’s Believe It or Not”. The show featured a segment on a new street dance emerging from New York City, breaking. Watching legendary crews like the Dynamic Rockers and Floor Masters battle it out on screen ignited the passion within him. Inspired by what he saw, he began practicing on his own, earning the nickname “Little U Rock” for his mastery of the U Rock (or top rock, as it’s known on the East Coast). 

Now, as a hip-hop historian, he is committed to documenting and preserving the culture’s rich history. He now documents interviews of other bboys through his YouTube channel.

Bboy Machine started breaking into his parents’ living room by learning one move at a time, focusing on mastering each element before blending them. While he started as a sports player, transitioning to breaking felt natural, though it required dedication and focus. 

His career took off when he joined Show Biz Productions, working with the Sacramento Kings and Sacramento Monarchs. This initial opportunity opened the doors for him to showcase his talent on a global stage. Over the years, he has graced numerous international platforms, performing as a professional b-boy in cities such as Toronto, Rotterdam, France, Japan, Moscow, Italy, Barcelona, Germany, and many more.

According to him, footwork and power moves are equally important and bring unique strengths to a performance. With that being said, if someone has amazing footwork and someone else has amazing power moves, you’re just waiting for the next person to mess up. He’s a fan of both styles, coming from California, where power moves were a significant part of the scene, he appreciates the blend of style and athleticism that breaking offers. 

One of the key strategies he employs in battles is the use of signature moves, unique tricks or combinations that people associate with him. He believes that keeping the audience and competitors guessing is essential to maintaining interest and excitement in his performances. Moreover, his definition of a battle is a real fight where people take it seriously and do not play around. He also considers music as everything because it is music before the moves and music makes the moves in breaking.

Additionally, he emphasized the importance of self-reflection and self-analysis. He advised dancers to make a habit of watching their own footage regularly.  In a world where everyone is watching and learning from each other, he stressed that someone is always studying you or your crew. He drew parallels with sports teams and companies that constantly monitor their competition.
